The Sidewalk Highway

This nine ft. wide, 15.46 mile stretch of Route 66 is between Miami (pronounced my-ama) & Afton OK.  When this portion of Route 66 was constructed in 1922, the state of Oklahoma did not have enough money to construct a paved two lane highway. This one lane highway was used until the newer section was constructed in 1937. Since it was so narrow it became known as "the sidewalk highway".
